Good news: the rain is done. This weekend is looking sunny across all three days, which means it's the perfect time to head to Poble Espanyol for Puppet Planet: Barcelona's beloved puppet festival, with 51 performances across 12 stages, street shows, workshops, and food trucks taking over the whole venue on Saturday and Sunday.

The rest of the weekend is stacked with live music and one very unexpected sport. Here are the highlights:

  • Handel & Friends: Five musicians on historical instruments take families from Vivaldi's Venice to Bach's Leipzig in one hour at L'Auditori. A genuinely transporting Saturday morning.

  • 1000 Pianos Spring Party: A free outdoor concert by friends of the KIDS.Barcelona community at Plaça Catalunya celebrating two years of the street piano project. Part birthday party, part impromptu gig.

  • Copa de Barcelona: Spain's first ever Australian-rules football tournament at Estadi de Sant Boi on Saturday: 7 international teams, an Auskick session on the pitch for kids 5+, a BBQ, and an afterparty at Belushi's.

From Saturday's puppet stages and Aussie Rules pitch to Sunday's symphonic halls, there's something worth getting off the sofa for every day this weekend.

Ben & Rahim

P.S. Last weekend, Rahim took the kids to the FLIC Festival in Glories and got turned away at the door: sold out. Always book before you leave the house. Meanwhile, Ben took his kids to IMAGINA2 in Gràcia and was recognized by a reader in the crowd. One of us had a better Sunday. 😅

The Rabbit Hole

Beneath the streets of Poble Sec, there's a network of tunnels that sheltered thousands of civilians during the Spanish Civil War. Refugi 307 (one of over 1,300 air raid shelters built across Barcelona in the 1930s) is now open for guided tours that take families 15 metres underground into a world that most people walk over every day without knowing exists. Cool, dark, and genuinely gripping for older kids. History you can feel in your bones. Book a tour
