Free Family Events in Barcelona This Month

Environmental Play at the Botanical Garden offers free Sunday mornings combining open exploration with guided workshops and tours led by educators. Activities rotate weekly and include building wish trees, creating mandalas with seeds, discovering insects and birds, making paper flowers, planting seasonal flowers, weaving, and exploring specific plant species like dragon trees and eucalyptus. The program runs January through July and September through December.

The Pedralbes Monastery cloister opens its doors on summer evenings, offering free access to one of the world's largest Gothic cloisters. Built in 1327 by Queen Elisenda de Montcada, the three-story cloister showcases Catalan Gothic architecture with spacious, harmonious proportions. Only the cloister is accessible during these hours; exhibitions and adjoining rooms remain closed.

A workshop where children install elastic bands from wall to wall to create a collective art installation inspired by Piet Mondrian's geometric compositions. Participants work in groups with a monitor to build an ephemeral maze-like structure using colored lines placed in any direction, then explore and play within their creation.

Festa Major de Sants runs August 22-30 with decorated streets, gegants parades, castellers building human towers, and kids' programming. The festival features floral offerings, sardana dances, stick dancing exhibitions, and community meals. The correfoc fire run lands on the final Saturday, August 29, with a child-scale version at 6:30pm, and the festa closes on Sunday, August 30 with a 10pm piromusical, fireworks set to music over Parc de l'Espanya Industrial. Eleven streets and squares compete for decoration prizes, with a smaller, locally-focused atmosphere than neighboring Gràcia.

The Pride Barcelona Parade features around 30 floats with music and performances traveling from Plaça Universitat to Plaça Espanya. The daytime event is designed as an all-ages spectacle with colorful floats and live entertainment. Watch from the parade route; arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and avoid the late-night parties that follow.
