Worth the Drive: 5 August Festivals Outside Barcelona

In August the festa major season moves out of the city. An hour or two in any direction, towns hand their streets over for a week, and they go places the city festes never will: foam parties in the square, a bike race where the whole town soaks the riders, fireworks over the sea. It's a chance for kids to connect with the people and traditions of the region they live in, and to see a side of it beyond Barcelona. Each town puts its very best on show for these few days, with lots going on for all ages. Pick one for a day out, or make a weekend of it.

SF → Barcelona (Eixample), kids 7 & 3 · Updated July 2026

These are ordered by drive time from Barcelona, from the closest (about 45 minutes) to the farthest (about 2 hours).

August is festa major month in the towns, so I trimmed this list to the five that are on right now. All five are free.

Les Nits Daurades is Salou's summer festa major, filling the town center and seafront with two weeks of free concerts, parades, traditional dances and family shows from August 1 to 15. The closing stretch is the biggest of the run: a Mecano tribute concert at Plaça de les Comunitats Autònomes on August 13, the Vespreig evening market with music at the Espigó del Moll on August 14, and a final night on August 15 with the Santa Maria del Mar sea procession at 9:15pm followed by the Gran Castell de Focs fireworks over Passeig Jaume I at 11pm. Free craft workshops for kids run most late afternoons at the Espai d'Infància in the old Estació del Carrilet, through August 14. Earlier in the festa the town folded the August 12 total solar eclipse into the program, with expert talks, kids' science workshops, beach yoga and viewing from Ponent and Llevant beaches.
