Pick four to six buildings close together. The festival groups its program into zones you can walk, so one zone per morning or afternoon is plenty without long trips across town. A printed map is available again this year.

When and how do we book?

Most buildings are walk-in: turn up during opening hours and a volunteer lets you in. Guided itineraries and infrastructure buildings that need a sign-up for safety open registration on Monday, Oct 19, and each activity's page on the festival site says whether it needs one. On Eventbrite, each person can book up to 2 tickets at a €3 fee each, and kids need their own ticket, so a family of four needs two adults booking.

Waits depend on how big the building is and how many people turn up. The festival runs a live map of busy and quiet spaces and posts updates on its social accounts during the weekend. Lesser-known buildings and early starts mean shorter lines.

Places with something to do or see: big spaces, a view, machinery, or a volunteer telling the story. Rooms that are mostly about fine details lose kids fast, so save those for a second stop once they are warmed up.
