Question 1

How do we get to Navarcles from Barcelona?

Accepted Answer

It's about 50km northwest of Barcelona, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic. By train, take a Renfe regional train from Plaça de Catalunya or Sants to Navarcles station, then it's a short walk or taxi to the Butterfly Garden at the library. Driving is probably easier if you have a car, but public transit works fine too.

Question 2

Is this workshop good for younger kids, or should we wait until they're older?

Accepted Answer

The event says "all audiences," but honestly, this is more engaging for kids 8 and up who can focus on identifying insects and understand the science behind it. Younger kids might get bored during the technical parts about monitoring methodology, though they'll probably enjoy spotting butterflies in the garden itself. If your 5-year-old loves bugs, it could work, but don't expect them to sit through the whole thing.

Question 3

How long should we plan to spend?

Accepted Answer

The workshop runs from 10:00 to 11:00 (one hour based on the event details), but plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours total including arrival, settling in, and a bit of time to explore the garden afterward. It's not a huge time commitment, so you could easily combine it with other activities in the area.

Question 4

Do we need to bring anything, or is it all provided?

Accepted Answer

The event doesn't specify, but for an outdoor butterfly identification workshop, bring sunscreen, a hat, and water for the kids. The technicians will likely provide any identification guides or materials you need. Wear comfortable shoes since you'll be walking around the garden.

Question 5

Do we actually get to help with the citizen science project, or is it just a talk?

Accepted Answer

The workshop teaches you the methodology used for the Butterfly Gardens citizen science project and the Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, so you'll learn how to contribute data yourself. It sounds like the training is hands-on enough that you could start monitoring butterflies in your own garden afterward, which is the whole point of the project.
