Upcoming: Nativity Scene Walk and Caganer Hunt in Barcelona

Around Christmas, Barcelona fills with pessebres, the Catalan nativity scenes: whole miniature villages of moss, rivers, mills and shepherds built around the manger. City Hall, the Cathedral, markets and neighborhood clubs each build one, and the most kid-friendly in 2025 was a giant Playmobil version in Gràcia. The game every local kid knows is spotting the caganer, a little peasant figure squatting with his pants down, hidden somewhere in almost every Catalan nativity. In the Cathedral cloister, kids also count the 13 white geese that live there. Living nativities, with neighbors in costume acting out the scenes, add a few more in December.
