Is there anything for a kid who doesn't read Catalan yet?

Yes, but aim for the workshop tent (Espai Tallers), not the stage. The stage shows are storytelling in Catalan. The workshops are drawing and making, where the pencil does the talking: on Saturday there is a manga drawing session at 11:30am (La Galera), a meerkat craft session at 12:30pm (Corimbo) and a make-your-first-comic session at 6:00pm (Edebé). On Sunday the one stage act that needs no language is Imaginem Xostakóvitx at noon, a musical circus built on Shostakovich, plus a design-your-own-Superpatata workshop at 11:15am. The stands are a different matter: nearly everything on sale is in Catalan, so it's not the place to stock up on English picture books.

Can we go after school on a weekday?

That's the normal weekday plan. The grounds stay open until 8:30pm every day except the closing Sunday, and weekday family sessions run from about 5:15pm to 7:30pm. Weekends have two windows: mornings from 10:45am to about 1pm, and afternoons from 5pm.

Do we need to sign up for anything in advance?

Only the literary walking tours. Those go in small groups, cost €9 (€6 with a Carnet Jove or Òmnium card, and a handful are free), and you book them on lasetmana.cat up to the day before or until they fill. Everything on the fairground itself, including the family stage, workshops, storytelling and signings, is walk-up with no registration. Workshop spots go to whoever is there when it starts, so arrive a few minutes early.

Where can the kids run around when they've had enough of books?

Ciutadella Park sits at the far end of the promenade, so it's a short walk from any of the stands, with playgrounds, the boating lake and the big fountain. It's the obvious escape valve: do an hour at the fair, then let them loose in the park.
