Every year on the Saturday before Easter, the little northern-Catalan town of Garriguella throws open its streets for the Fira de la Garnatxa i del Brunyol. Two Empordà specialties take centre stage: brunyols, the region's lightly sweet, doughnut-like fritters fried fresh on the spot, and garnatxa, the local sweet wine poured straight from the barrel. Around the food, an artisan market fills the village with regional products, and there are workshops, hands-on children's activities, a craft market, wine tasting, sardana dancing, batucada drumming and live music. It's a relaxed, wander-at-your-own-pace day out in the Alt Empordà, about 90 minutes north of Barcelona and an easy pairing with a visit to Figueres or the Costa Brava.
