Upcoming: Caga Tió Fairs and Tió Hunts Near Barcelona

The Tió, or Caga Tió, is the Catalan Christmas log: a little log with a painted smiling face, a red barretina hat and a blanket to keep it warm. From early December kids feed it bits of bread and orange peel every night, and on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day they beat it with sticks while singing a song that orders it to poop out presents, then lift the blanket to find sweets underneath. Tió fairs celebrate the tradition with stalls full of logs of every size, workshops to decorate your own, and in some villages a hunt through the woods to find one to take home.
