Question 1

Which shows work if my kids don't speak Catalan or Spanish?

Accepted Answer

Most of the street arts program is visual. Safe picks: STELI at Parc de l'Estació del Nord (you build the show yourselves), the Beyond ladder circus and the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe at the Fòrum, SERENA and Banaba Flup at Port Olímpic, and Dance with Swagger at Parc de la Trinitat, which the program lists as a show with no text. The Sòmion puppet show and the Rau-rau concert are in Catalan, still fun for the puppets and the music. The program does not say which language the Beatrix Potter headphone audio uses, but the miniature scenes are worth a look either way.

We only have one weekend morning. Where should we go?

With kids under 6, Jardins de Joan Maragall on Montjuïc: it is a calm garden that only opens for La Mercè, with the Beatrix Potter trail from 10:30am, puppets at 11am and a concert at 12:30pm, plus a quiet space. With kids 6 and up, Port Olímpic: crafts from 11am, clowns at 11:15am, circus at 12:15pm, then lunch by the water. Note that Port Olímpic runs mornings only on Sunday.

What's a good weekend plan with kids?

Accepted Answer

Saturday: a family park in the morning, a slow lunch, then the kids' fire run at 6pm on Passeig de Gràcia. Sunday: the human towers at noon in Plaça Sant Jaume, an afternoon at the Fòrum acrobats or a rest, and the fireworks at 10pm if the kids are still going. Thursday, the day off school, has its own plan on our No School Thursday page.

Is the Correfoc dels Petits gentler than the adult fire run?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is built for kids, with smaller fire effects and a slower pace, and it runs Saturday from 6pm to 7:45pm while it is still light, on Passeig de Gràcia between Provença and Consell de Cent. Long sleeves, closed shoes and a hat still apply. If your child is nervous around noise, watch from the Consell de Cent end where the crowd thins out, or skip it and stick to the daytime activities.

Question 5

Can small kids see the human towers on Sunday?

Accepted Answer

The towers are the hardest thing to see with small kids: the square packs tight and everyone looks up at once. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and stand at the edges, or catch the teams as they parade in from Palau de la Virreina on La Rambla at 11:30am, which is easier with little ones. The family parks are far less packed than the headline events.

Will we spend the whole time stuck in crowds?

Accepted Answer

Only if you go for the headliners. The castellers and the closing Piromusical draw enormous crowds, so with young kids arrive early and stake out a spot at the edge. Everything else is far calmer: street theater, circus and music are spread across parks all over the city. Pick two or three things a day rather than chasing the whole program.

How do we get around between venues?

Accepted Answer

Metro, every time. Parc de l'Estació del Nord is a short walk from Arc de Triomf (L1), Port Olímpic is by Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica (L4), the Fòrum stages are at El Maresme-Fòrum (L4) and Parc de la Trinitat sits on top of Trinitat Vella (L1). For Jardins de Joan Maragall take bus 150 up Montjuïc from Plaça Espanya. A multi-trip T-Casual card works out much cheaper than buying singles. Don't plan on doing the Fòrum and Montjuïc the same day with small kids; pick one side of the city per outing.

Question 8

Should we pack our own water and snacks?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Plaça Sant Jaume has bars and restaurants around it, but they get slammed during peak hours, so bring water and snacks. Use the bathrooms before the crowds build, since public toilets can have long queues.
