Do we need to drive to Tarragona to see the good stuff, or is watching from Barcelona worth it?

If your kids are old enough to understand what they're looking at, Barcelona is worth it. You'll see 99.7% coverage, which is genuinely rare and dramatic even without totality. But if you want the full experience (the corona, the sudden darkness, the whole "day turns to night" moment), Tarragona is about an hour south and absolutely worth the drive. Just plan to leave early because everyone else will have the same idea.

Where exactly should we go in Barcelona to see it?

You need an unobstructed view low to the west, and height matters more than usual this year: at maximum the Sun sits just 4 degrees above the horizon. Montjuïc is the family pick: metro to Paral·lel, funicular up, stroller-friendly paths, and the Mirador del Migdia (a flat 10 minute walk west past the castle) faces the sunset. Tibidabo's park has told visitors the eclipse won't be visible from inside, and Bunkers del Carmel's fenced top closes at 19:30, though families gather on the steep open slopes below. Beach level is the trap: the skyline hides the low Sun well before the best part, so go up, not out. Wherever you go, be in place by 19:00.

How do we get the kids ready before the big day?

CosmoCaixa runs a family workshop, A la recerca de l'eclipsi, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 17:00 through Aug 26, so there is a session on eclipse day itself. Kids 8 and up build a take-home solar projection box and learn how eclipses work. It costs 6 euros plus museum admission and runs in Catalan. CosmoCaixa's other eclipse activities have sold out, so book ahead. And sort your ISO 12312-2 glasses this week: shops and museums around the city are selling down.

Is this something a 4-year-old will care about or should we skip it?

Accepted Answer

A 4-year-old won't understand the science, but they will be amazed by the sudden dimming and the crowd energy. If they refuse to wear glasses, you'll have to make sure they don't look at the sun. Older kids (7+) who can follow instructions and keep glasses on will get way more out of it.
