Yes. The installations are in the streets, squares and courtyards of the old town and cost nothing. Parking is free at the recinte firal (the fairground), marked on the festival map, with paid car parks closer to the center.

How busy does it get?

It is one of Olot's most popular events and draws visitors from across Catalonia, so expect crowds along the route in the center. A carrier is easier than a stroller for small kids, and the festival hands out red ID wristbands for children at its info points.

Can we get there without a car?

There is no train to Olot. Coaches from Barcelona run to Olot bus station, a short walk from the old town.

What else can we do in Olot with kids that weekend?

Olot sits inside the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. Pair the festival with a daytime walk up the Montsacopa volcano, right on the edge of town, where the secondary schools' installation lights up after dark. There is a food area in the Espai Cràter park both nights.

Pick up a red wristband for each kid at the Lluèrnia info points before you set off: it carries your contact details and helps Protecció Civil reunite you fast if you get separated in the crowds
Everything lights up at dusk, about 5:40pm in early November, and most pieces run both nights; the storytelling, the dragon hunt and the closing fire show are Saturday only
Built by schoolkids: 13 primary schools from Olot and the Garrotxa made the carpet of light on the Firalet, and the secondary schools lit up the Montsacopa volcano

Lluèrnia turns the old town of Olot, the city of volcanoes, into a night walk of light and fire art. Families wander from square to square past glowing sculptures, projections and flame pieces, many built by local schoolkids. It suits kids who are happy to stay out after dark and walk at an easy pace. This is the festival's 15th and final edition.

A fire piece hidden somewhere in the old town. The festival says the dragon hides harder than ever this last year, so ask at an info point.

The farewell show starts on Carrer de Macarnau, in front of the cemetery, and ends at the Escola El Morrot car park. Sparks and smoke: keep small kids well back.
